Fundació Puigvert: Pioneers in robotic surgery in Spain
First to perform robotic surgical interventions
In 2005, Fundació Puigvert was the first center in the State to incorporate the Da Vinci® robot and to perform the first robotic surgical interventions, such as prostatectomy and cystectomy.
Pioneers in complex procedures
It has been a pioneer in performing the first pediatric interventions, the first live donor kidney extraction, and the first complete kidney transplant using robotic surgery in Spain and Europe.
Constant innovation
In 2022, it was the first center in the State and the second in Europe to use the HUGO™ robot, performing the first prostatectomies and nephrectomies with this state-of-the-art system.
European leadership
From Fundació Puigvert, the Section of Robotic Surgery (ERUS) of the European Association of Urology (EAU) is presided over by Dr. Alberto Breda from 2022 to 2029. The Foundation is the coordinating center of the European Robotic Kidney Transplant Group (ERUS-RAKT) and collaborates in the training and development of new robotic surgical techniques at an international level.
Chair of Urological Robotic Surgery-UAB
In 2024, the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) and Fundació Puigvert created the Chair of Urological Robotic Surgery-UAB, to jointly promote teaching, research, innovation, and dissemination in this field of knowledge.
The best surgical team
The robotic surgery team at Fundació Puigvert is made up of nationally and European recognized professionals in oncological urology and kidney transplantation, with extensive experience in high-complexity procedures.
Robotic Urological Surgery: Applications
Fundació Puigvert is a reference in robotic surgery applied to urology, with special emphasis on:
PRR
Robotic radical prostatectomy
Procedure with better oncological and functional outcomes for prostate cancer.
CRR
Robotic radical cystectomy
Robotic procedure for bladder cancer, pioneers in Spain and worldwide.
NPR
Partial and radical nephrectomy
Procedure that preserves the maximum healthy renal tissue in cases of kidney cancer.
TRR
Robotic complete kidney transplant
Pioneers in Spain and Europe and European coordinating center in this technique.
CP
CR
Reconstructive surgery
Application of robotics in complex urinary tract surgeries.
TRT
Retroperitoneal lymphadenectomy in testicular cancer
NU
Nephroureterectomy
Treatment of tumors of the upper urinary tract that reduces their risk of recurrence
AT
Autotransplantation
Complex intervention that allows reimplantation of the own kidney after treating certain injuries
Advantages of robotic surgery
Precision and safety
Allows extremely precise movements, minimizing tremor and facilitating the dissection of delicate tissues.
Faster recovery
Patients experience faster functional recovery and fewer days of hospitalization.
Ergonomics for the surgeon
The surgeon operates seated, with high-definition 3D vision and a range of motion superior to that of the human wrist, reducing physical and mental fatigue.
Minimally invasive surgery
Incisions are smaller, reducing postoperative pain, bleeding, and the risk of complications.
Better functional outcomes
In prostate surgery, robotics favors the preservation of urinary continence and erectile function, and in nephrectomies, allows for the conservation of more healthy renal tissue.
Precision and safety
Allows extremely precise movements, minimizing tremor and facilitating the dissection of delicate tissues.
High-end robotic equipment
Da Vinci Unit®
Incorporated in 2005, the Da Vinci® System has been key in performing thousands of high-complexity robotic interventions.
HUGO Units™
Since 2022, Fundació Puigvert has had this state-of-the-art robot, being a pioneer in Spain and Europe in its clinical use.
Robotic Tele-surgery
From Fundació Puigvert, the first transoceanic robotic tele-surgery program in Europe has been led, implemented between two Spanish hospitals: Fundació Puigvert itself and the San Roque University Hospitals (Canary Islands), with operational and care implementation carried out by GUA-Urointec.
