Fundació Puigvert↗︎
Fundació Puigvert develops innovative and multidisciplinary research, focused on improving the quality of life of patients and the transfer of knowledge to clinical practice.
The R&D+i of Fundació Puigvert is grouped into four research lines that include rare or minority diseases; urological pathologies; chronic kidney disease; and sexual and reproductive health. All of them are structured based on four transversal axes: innovation, personalized medicine, patient-centered research, and gender perspective.
Transversal Axes
Innovation
At Fundació Puigvert, innovation is the engine that transforms scientific knowledge into real solutions for patients, through new surgical procedures, advanced diagnostic techniques, and cutting-edge medical devices.
We work collaboratively with the biomedical industry and health innovation networks to validate emerging technologies and promote pilot projects that improve the quality, safety, and efficiency of healthcare.
Personalized Medicine
Research at Fundació Puigvert integrates personalized medicine to adapt diagnoses and treatments to the genetic, clinical, and social characteristics of each person, especially in urological cancer, rare kidney diseases, and infertility.
This approach combines biomarkers, genomics, and artificial intelligence tools applied to large volumes of clinical data, aiming to anticipate risks, optimize outcomes, and reduce adverse effects.
Patient-Oriented Research
All projects are designed to translate scientific advances directly into clinical practice, prioritizing the improvement of quality of life, patient experience, and the autonomy of individuals and their families.
The active participation of patients, associations, and caregivers is promoted throughout the research cycle, incorporating their voice in defining needs, evaluating results, and developing informational materials and educational programs.
Research and Gender
Fundació Puigvert integrates the gender perspective in research, both in the design of studies and in the analysis of results, to identify differences in the diagnosis, treatment, and impact of urological, renal, and reproductive pathologies in women, men, and trans people.
In the field of infertility and sexual health, the Andrology and Reproductive Medicine teams work together in a multigender approach, considering diverse identities and family models, ensuring inclusive, respectful, and evidence-based care.
Minority
diseases
Fundació Puigvert is a reference center for the diagnosis and treatment of minority urogenital and renal diseases, both at the Catalan, state, and European levels. The activity is mainly carried out through the Pediatric Urology and Clinical Nephrology units, with multidisciplinary teams recognized for their experience in hereditary and glomerular rare diseases.
Our areas are:
Glomerular kidney diseases
Hereditary kidney diseases
Congenital urogenital malformations
Familial urolithiasis
The Foundation is one of the Centers, Services, and Reference Units of the National Health System (SNS) and is also part of the Network of Clinical Expertise Units (XUEC) of the Catalan Health Service. It participates in various European networks, such as ERKnet, leading research projects and clinical trials in diseases such as immune origin interstitial nephropathy, hereditary glomerulopathies, tubulopathies, thrombotic microangiopathies, renal hypoplasia/dysplasia, and autosomal dominant dysplastic kidney disease.
The leadership of our researchers is reflected in the competitive state and regional public grants awarded to develop their research projects at the center for over twenty years
Urological
pathologies
Research in urology at Fundació Puigvert covers everything from oncological urology to urinary lithiasis and robotic surgery. The research group in Urology works on the development of advanced surgical techniques, diagnosis and treatment of urological tumors, and innovation in minimally invasive surgery. The Urinary Lithiasis Unit stands out for the study and treatment of kidney stones, with its own laboratory for the analysis and prevention of lithiasis.
Our areas are:
Study of biomarkers in urine, blood, and tissues: genetic and immunohistochemical analyses applied to urological cancers
Transplantation and benign urogenital pathology: urinary incontinence, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), urinary lithiasis…
Oncology
Congenital
urogenital malformations
Clinical research of new surgical procedures, medications, and medical devices applied to urological and renal oncology
Tissue engineering applied to urology
Kidney disease
The research group in Nephrology at Fundació Puigvert is a reference in the study of kidney diseases, both hereditary and acquired. The research includes clinical trials, cohort studies, genomic research, and participation in state and European networks. It addresses areas such as renal failure, diabetic nephropathy, hypertension, cardiorenal pathology, glomerulopathy, and hereditary kidney disease.
Our areas are:
Application of Artificial Intelligence in the field of hereditary kidney diseases
Methods for treating rejection and infections associated with kidney transplantation, and application of AI in prognosis
Cardiovascular risk in patients with chronic kidney disease
Glomerular diseases:
inflammatory process and fibrosis
Genomic studies in hereditary kidney diseases
Renal osteodystrophy:
bone quality in renal patients
Infertility and
sexual health
In the field of male infertility, Fundació Puigvert has a group of Andrology and Assisted Reproduction of international reference, pioneering in research and assistance.
Basic research, highly oriented towards improving the management of our patients, focuses on the identification of new genes associated with infertility, reproductive genomics, and oncofertility.
Our areas are:
Genetics of male infertility and reproductive genomics, “oncofertility”
Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) and in vitro fertilization (IVF) techniques
Female sexuality
Endocrine disorders related to male infertility and sexual dysfunctions
Development of new surgical procedures, medications, and medical devices applied to andrological diseases and conditions: male sexual dysfunction, hypogonadism, Peyronie’s disease, premature ejaculation, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), etc.
Fundació Puigvert has always promoted multidisciplinary work in the approach and diagnosis of male and female infertility. The teams of Andrology and Reproductive Medicine work together in the comprehensive approach to human reproduction. The innovative differential feature is the inclusion of a multigender approach to reproductive health.
These areas and groups consolidate Fundació Puigvert as a reference center in biomedical research, with a clear commitment to innovation, personalized medicine, and the transfer of knowledge to clinical practice.
