Assisted Reproduction Laboratory
Innovation, precision, and human support
A key piece to offer our services
In our laboratory, gametes (eggs and sperm) are processed for use in various assisted reproduction techniques: artificial insemination, in vitro fertilization, preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD), and oocyte vitrification. We have state-of-the-art technology that guarantees maximum safety and traceability of procedures.
Frequently Asked Questions

The Reproductive Medicine team at Fundació Puigvert studies each case individually, assessing the medical history and conducting initial diagnostic tests to determine the most appropriate treatment: it may be artificial insemination for cases with good ovarian reserve and healthy tubes, in vitro fertilization or IVF with ICSI if there are severe male factors or low reserve, fertility preservation if maternity is to be postponed, egg donation if the own eggs are not viable, or other advanced options such as PGT or double donation for complex situations.
Our success rates are comparable to the best European centers, with a cumulative success rate of over 50% in IVF and excellent results in artificial insemination and fertility preservation. Additionally, we are pioneers in preimplantation genetic diagnosis, with over 600 families who have been able to have healthy offspring thanks to this program.
Our assisted reproduction program presents pregnancy and birth rates per cycle comparable to the best European centers. In the case of IVF, the success rate with own eggs in the first attempt is 65% (using all embryos obtained in the cycle).
The most important thing, however, is that there is no single rate valid for all circumstances. For this reason, we make an estimate tailored to your age and situation, so you have a realistic idea of your options.
The basic study of the couple with fertility difficulties includes the following tests:
Common tests in women
- Complete medical history (previous illnesses, surgeries, menstrual cycles, previous pregnancies).
- Gynecological examination and transvaginal ultrasound to assess the uterus and ovaries.
- Hormonal analysis to estimate ovarian reserve and function.
- Serologies (HIV, hepatitis B and C, syphilis, rubella).
- Coagulation study or thrombophilias in some cases.
- Hysterosalpingography or sonohysterography, if insemination is considered, to check the permeability of the tubes.
- Karyotype or other genetic studies in special situations.
Common tests in men
- Semen analysis: analysis of the concentration, motility, and morphology of sperm.
- Serologies (HIV, hepatitis B and C, syphilis).
- Karyotype or other genetic studies, on some occasions.
Today it is possible to preserve fertility before starting oncological treatment. Both chemotherapy and radiotherapy can irreversibly affect ovarian reserve or semen quality. Therefore, we recommend considering preservation as soon as the diagnosis is received and before starting treatment.
The most common options are:
In women:
- Egg freezing (vitrification): the ovaries are stimulated to obtain eggs, which are frozen and stored until you want to use them.
- Embryo freezing: if you have a partner or wish to fertilize the eggs before preserving them.
- Ovarian tissue cryopreservation: in cases where there is not enough time for stimulation or in prepubertal girls/young women.
In men:
- Semen freezing: a simple and quick procedure that guarantees the possibility of using sperm in the future.
This process is usually done quickly and coordinated with the oncology team, so as not to delay the start of cancer treatment. Our goal is for you to focus on recovery with the peace of mind that, if you wish, you can later try to become a mother or father.
We have a specialized clinical psychology service that supports the individual or couple at all stages of the process, helping to manage stress, emotions, and decision-making, with individual, couple, or group sessions according to needs.
