International reference in advanced andrological surgery

Specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of alterations in the male sexual and reproductive sphere, Josvany Sánchez has established himself as a reference figure in the field of andrology. A graduate in Medicine from the University of Havana and trained as a specialist in Andrology at Fundació Puigvert, his career is marked by expertise in andrological microsurgery, genital reconstructive surgery, and treatment of Peyronie’s disease and other penile curvatures.

In parallel to his clinical activity, he coordinates the Clinical Andrology Master’s program at the University of Vic – Central University of Catalonia (UVic – UCC) and develops an intense research activity at the Andrology Research Group at the Sant Pau Research Institute (IR Sant Pau), participating in numerous national and international studies and clinical trials.

A definitive solution for a problem affecting 2 million men

The implantation of a penile prosthesis represents the most effective treatment for patients with erectile dysfunction who do not respond to conventional treatments, whether pharmacological or local to the penis. This is a particularly common situation in men who have undergone pelvic surgery, radiotherapy due to prostate cancer, or who suffer from diabetes with vascular complications.

“The penile prosthesis is a definitive solution that allows the recovery of sexual function with very high satisfaction levels, both for patients and their partners,” explains Josvany Sánchez.

Erectile dysfunction affects approximately one in five men in Spain, which means nearly two million people. Although its prevalence increases with age, it can also appear suddenly as a consequence of certain medical treatments or surgical interventions.

The current clinical guidelines of the European Association of Urology (EAU) consider the penile prosthesis a fully established therapeutic option and recommend that it may be chosen as the first alternative for those patients who, properly informed, prefer it. Satisfaction rates exceed 90%, placing it among the highest in all urological functional surgery.

Invisible technology and personalized treatment

Fundació Puigvert is one of the centers with the most experience in uroandrological prosthetic surgery in the State, with nearly 1,500 penile prosthesis interventions in the last 25 years, more than 500 of which have been performed by Josvany Sánchez.

The success of the program is based on a personalized selection of the most suitable device for each patient. Currently, two main types of prostheses are used:

  • Hydraulic or inflatable prostheses: These are the most technologically advanced devices. They incorporate cylinders implanted in the penis, a liquid reservoir located behind the pubic symphysis or below the abdominal muscles (ectopic location), and a small pump located inside the scrotum, completely invisible from the outside. They allow for a controlled erection and offer a very natural appearance when flaccid.
  • Malleable or semi-rigid prostheses: These consist of flexible cylinders with a metallic core that allows the position of the penis to be adapted according to the patient’s needs. They are particularly indicated in certain clinical situations, such as men with difficulty manipulating the scrotal pump for various reasons, contraindication or high risk for placing the reservoir of a hydraulic prosthesis, patient preference, etc.

Care, teaching, and research leadership

This European recognition reinforces the positioning of Fundació Puigvert as a reference center in andrology and urological prosthetic surgery, and highlights the institution’s commitment to care excellence, innovation, and research in the service of male sexual health.
