{"id":37870,"date":"2026-09-10T18:26:27","date_gmt":"2026-09-10T17:26:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fundaciopuigvert.org\/innovation-integration-and-a-vision-for-the-future-mark-the-mandate-of-prof-roser-torra-at-the-helm-of-european-nephrology\/"},"modified":"2026-09-10T18:26:27","modified_gmt":"2026-09-10T17:26:27","slug":"innovation-integration-and-a-vision-for-the-future-mark-the-mandate-of-prof-roser-torra-at-the-helm-of-european-nephrology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fundaciopuigvert.org\/en\/innovation-integration-and-a-vision-for-the-future-mark-the-mandate-of-prof-roser-torra-at-the-helm-of-european-nephrology\/","title":{"rendered":"Innovation, integration, and a vision for the future mark the mandate of Prof. Roser Torra at the helm of European nephrology"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Dr. Roser Torra, a world expert in hereditary kidney diseases, head of Clinical Nephrology at Fundaci\u00f3 Puigvert and researcher at the Sant Pau Research Institute, is the first woman to preside over the European Renal Association (ERA)<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The well-being of patients, inclusivity, and technological innovation will be the 3 priorities of the largest nephrology association in Europe and the Mediterranean basin during the upcoming triennium (2024-2027)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Professor Roser Torra Balcells, nephrologist at Fundaci\u00f3 Puigvert, takes on the presidency of the European Renal Association (ERA &#8211; European Renal Association by its English acronym) representing over 26,000 nephrologists from across Europe during the celebration of the 61st edition of the annual congress held from May 23-26 in Stockholm (Sweden).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With this appointment, Dr. Torra is the first woman to hold this position and her first statement has been addressed to all patients suffering from kidney disease: \u201c<strong><em>our fundamental focus will be on the well-being of kidney patients, and this is where we will direct all our actions and initiatives<\/em><\/strong>.\u201d In this regard, her commitment is to improve patient care by promoting the clinical application of the latest scientific advances through training and dissemination among professionals, but also by raising awareness among governments about the social and economic impact of chronic kidney disease (CKD). According to Dr. Torra, \u201cthe results of the latest clinical studies published in leading scientific journals, such as the <em>New England Journal of Medicine<\/em>, indicate that \u201c<strong><em>we are at a peak moment in nephrology with the development of new therapies to treat chronic kidney disease<\/em><\/strong>. In this context, she adds that <strong><em>\u201cERA will not hesitate to put all means to help raise awareness among governments and public health institutions to direct efforts and resources towards the early diagnosis of chronic kidney disease.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the other hand, equity and inclusivity are, according to the new president of ERA, at the forefront of the presidency&#8217;s actions, not only regarding professionals but also towards the people they care for: \u201c<strong><em>We need to include all people, regardless of their background, gender, and condition. Our patients should not suffer inequities in health<\/em><\/strong>.\u201d Although the <em>Association does not adopt any political ideology, Dr. Torra points out that<\/em><strong><em> \u201cas medical professionals, we are committed to helping people, especially those with kidney disease who find themselves in vulnerable situations as victims of natural or human-made disasters<\/em><\/strong>,\u201d referring to the working group on Kidney Aid in Disasters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, innovation will constitute the third priority axis during the upcoming triennium to be a \u201c<strong><em>living association, capable of leveraging the latest technologies and new knowledge and providing them to its members; an association with a vision for the future<\/em><\/strong><strong>.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\"><br>Equity, collaboration, and optimism mark the beginning of the upcoming triennium of ERA<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first action of the new presidency has been the launch of the working group \u201cWomen of ERA\u201d (WERA) with the aim of raising awareness in the medical community and society about gender equality in the field of nephrology. In a context where the increasing presence of women in medicine is not reflected in the number of principal investigators or speakers at medical-scientific congresses, nor represented in leadership and decision-making positions or opinion leaders, WERA will encourage women nephrologists to contribute to research and scientific dissemination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another line of work that will be initiated will be to strengthen institutional relationships with national societies \u2013 such as the Sociedad Espa\u00f1ola de Nefrolog\u00eda (SEN) \u2013 where ERA can serve in a way as an umbrella for the societies and a meeting point to discuss their differences and difficulties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, Dr. Torra aims to establish spaces for dialogue and exchange among nephrologists of all ages and backgrounds from Europe and the Mediterranean basin. \u201c<strong><em>I have seen many young people at this edition of the ERA annual congress; they are the future of nephrology and I see a truly bright future in our specialty<\/em><\/strong>,\u201d she predicts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fundaciopuigvert.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/240526_Roser-Torra-presidenta-ERA-Fundacio-Puigvert_1-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17534\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>About Roser Torra<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Roser Torra is head of Clinical Nephrology and coordinates the Hereditary Kidney Diseases Clinic (MRH) of the Nephrology Service at Fundaci\u00f3 Puigvert in Barcelona. She is a Professor of Medicine at UAB. She began her journey in the field of CKD in 1994 and completed her doctorate on Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD) in 1997. Since then, she has been deeply involved in both clinical practice and research, focusing on diseases such as ADPKD, Fabry disease, Alport syndrome, CET, cystinosis, and GEFS, among other rare diseases. With over 200 national and international publications on kidney diseases, Dr. Torra has made significant contributions in this field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Torra&#8217;s involvement goes beyond research and clinical practice. She currently actively participates in numerous trials and projects on hereditary kidney disorders, both nationally and internationally, while also supervising doctoral theses on MRHs. She also acts as a reviewer\/advisor in this field for various journals, meetings, project evaluation agencies, and governmental political bodies. Her expertise has been recognized at various KDIGO meetings. Dr. Roser Torra is also the coordinator of the Spanish research network (RICORS2040) and the European Reference Network (ERKnet).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Torra holds the position of president of ERA (European Renal Association) from 2024 to 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>About ERA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal of ERA is to reduce the burden of chronic kidney disease by promoting basic and clinical research in the fields of clinical nephrology, dialysis, and kidney transplantation. It works to strengthen the community of nephrologists and to ensure that renal health is prioritized in Europe and that renal care is accessible to everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This association publishes two of the most important official journals in the field of nephrology, leaders in Europe: <em>Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation<\/em> and <em>Clinical Kidney Journal<\/em> (open access).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a
