Why consider
a live donor
transplant?

The live donor kidney transplant is, for many patients with advanced chronic kidney disease, the option that offers better results in patient and graft survival, and a better quality of life compared to dialysis and cadaveric transplantation.

The kidneys from live donors come from healthy individuals, do not suffer prolonged preservation times or aggressive extractions, and this translates into faster and more stable kidney function.

The transplant can be scheduled at the moment the recipient needs it, thus avoiding the need to start dialysis as a substitute therapy.

Pioneers and reference center in living donation

We are one of the centers with the most experience in kidney transplantation in Spain: since 1981 we have performed over 3,000 transplants.

In the field of living donation, we have achieved significant milestones:

2002

Pioneers in implementing the living donor program in Spain.

2004

First transplant between non-related individuals in the country

2009

First laparoscopic kidney transplant from a living donor in the world

2010

First kidney extraction from a living donor with Da Vinci robot in Spain

2012

First transplant chain with “good Samaritan” and cross transplants within the national program.

We are an accredited reference and training center for the Organización Nacional de Trasplantes (ONT) and OCATT, and we organize annual training courses in kidney transplantation from living donors for professionals from all over Spain.

As a donor candidate, here you will have:

Nephrologists specialized in transplantation and waiting lists.

Urologists experts in live donor surgery and transplantation, including laparoscopic and robotic approaches.

Specialized and advanced practice nursing (IPA) in transplantation.

Clinical psychology to assess the emotional impact on donors and recipients.

Whether you are a patient or a potential donor, we can clearly explain what the process involves, what tests need to be done, and how we will accompany you at each stage.

Minimally invasive
surgery and
robotic transplantation

Fundació Puigvert has also been a pioneer in the application of laparoscopy and robotic surgery in live donor kidney transplantation.

Approximately 70% of live donor transplants are performed using robotic surgery, which results in:

  • Less postoperative pain and faster recovery.
  • Fewer surgical complications.
  • Better aesthetic results for the donor and, in many cases, for the recipient.

For the donor, we use minimally invasive techniques (laparoscopic or robotic nephrectomy) that reduce hospital stay and allow for earlier reintegration into daily life.

If you are concerned about the impact of surgery on the donor person, you will be reassured to know that, since 2000, Fundació Puigvert has moved away from open surgery. Since then, all interventions on donors are performed using minimally invasive techniques, such as laparoscopy or robotic surgery.
